Transformers were no more than a choking hazard to then-toddler Shia LaBeouf in the late 80s. While they are now set to propel him into fame, DISTURBIA is far more relevant to LaBeouf and his YouTube generation.

LaBeouf’s character Kale should know better than to share a beer with his father on a fishing trip – Kodak moments such as these are just bound to end in tears. A car accident drives the spunky Kale to a violent outburst at school, and he is sentenced to three months of house arrest. To anyone over sweet sixteen, the ensuing adventure is best read as the wish fulfilment fantasy of a house-bound adolescent, stewing in hormones and struggling to comprehend his loss.

A combination of two obvious hate figures – George Bush and Hannibal Lecter – not only kills a bunny rabbit but threatens Kale’s late dad by flirting with his mom. David Morse gives his all, but seems unjustly resigned to his status as “always the baddie, never The Villain”. Having saved the day, Pee-wee Herman look-alike Kale is so over his dead dad, and his swim in a pool of yuck with some rotting women, in a matter of hours. He enjoys a well-earned smooch from his best girl. And a Coke.
